Search "AC repair cost" and you'll find quotes ranging from $80 to $8,000, most of them either years out of date or written to sell you something. Homeowners end up accepting the first number a contractor says, with nothing to check it against.
We publish what work actually costs in 2026, and a free directory of HVAC contractors so you can find someone local and verify them yourself. Everything is free to read, and no contractor pays to be listed.

Who's behind it
AirProHQ is run by Chris, founder & editor. It's an independent site, not owned by a contractor network, a manufacturer or a lead-generation company — which matters, because those are precisely the parties with an interest in the numbers looking higher than they are.
We're not HVAC technicians, and we don't pretend to be. What we do is research pricing carefully, show our working, and tell you plainly when a figure is an estimate rather than a quote. For anything specific to your home, a licensed contractor's assessment beats ours every time — and our guides say so.
How we research cost data
Every figure in our guides comes from the same process:
- Industry pricing sources. We compile ranges from established cost databases, manufacturer announcements and contractor-reported pricing, rather than repeating a single source's numbers.
- Current market reporting. Fast-moving factors — the A2L refrigerant transition, Section 232 metal tariffs, manufacturer list-price increases — are checked against current reporting rather than assumed stable. HVAC pricing moved sharply in 2026 and guides written in 2024 are simply wrong.
- Regional variation, stated openly. National averages are a starting point, not a promise. Where labour rates or climate change the answer materially, we say so instead of quoting one number.
- Formulas with worked examples. Any decision rule we publish — the 50% repair-versus-replace test, SEER2 payback periods — is shown with real numbers so you can check the arithmetic yourself. We've thrown out formulas that didn't survive that test.
Guides carry a "last updated" date, and we revisit them when the market shifts rather than leaving stale figures to rot.
How the directory works
Listings are compiled from publicly available business profiles. Contractors cannot pay for placement, ranking or removal of competitors, and we don't take a commission on work booked through the site.
Being listed is not an endorsement. We don't inspect workmanship or verify licences and insurance — always check those yourself before hiring. Our contractor hiring guide covers exactly what to ask.
Corrections
If a price looks wrong, a listing is out of date, or we've simply made a mistake, tell us and we'll fix it. Accuracy is the only thing that makes a site like this worth reading. Email contact@airprohq.com and we'll correct it or explain our reasoning.
