No size limit
Heating, cooling, refrigeration, sheet metal and gas piping for systems of any size, residential or commercial.
Up to 25 tons cooling
Capped at 25 tons of cooling and 500,000 BTU/h of heating per appliance. That covers any house.
Single-trade work
Refrigeration, sheet metal, natural gas piping and ground source piping each have their own narrower license. None of them alone covers a full home system.
- An active contractor must keep a $5,000 surety bond and at least $50,000 of general liability insurance on file with the CIB.
- A CIB license is valid statewide, but cities can still require permits, inspections and local registration.
- Minimum efficiency for new equipment: 14.3 SEER2 for split-system air conditioners under 45,000 BTU/h (DOE Southeast region, 2023 standard), the same minimum as Texas and Florida.

Does my HVAC contractor need a state license in Oklahoma?
Yes. Mechanical work needs a Construction Industries Board license (59 O.S. §1850.7). The Act does carve out some work: a contractor licensed locally who works only in that locality does not need the state license (§1850.15), and §1850.10(B) exempts six further cases, including a property owner of record doing minor repair such as cleaning, adjusting, and replacing fuses or room thermostats.
HVAC/R Limited or Unlimited: does it matter for my house?
Not for a home. The Limited license is capped at 25 tons of cooling and 500,000 BTU/h of heating per appliance, far above what a house uses. The Unlimited license matters for large commercial systems.
How do I check an Oklahoma HVAC license?
Ask the contractor for the license number and search it on the Oklahoma CIB lookup (official site).
