How we verify a license
A "Verified" badge on a listing means one specific thing: we checked that business's license number against its own state's real HVAC licensing board, and the two agree on both the license and the business's location. It does not mean we inspected the business, checked insurance, or confirmed workmanship — see our about page for what being listed does and doesn't imply.
The exact rule
A listing only carries a Verified badge if all of the following are true:
- It has a license number on file.
- That license was matched to a board that is actually this business's own state's board — not a different state's register, and not a general-contractor board standing in for a missing HVAC-specific one.
- Where a listing was joined across two separate public sources rather than matched directly (currently only Texas and Florida), the join itself has been corroborated against a second independent field before the badge shows.
Every page on the site — badges, counts, FAQ copy, the state/city lookup tables — reads this same check. There's one function that decides it, so a listing can't show as verified in one place and unverified in another.
Current match rate
Of 30,556 businesses listed, 24,653 (80.7%) currently carry a Verified badge under the rule above. The rest either have no license number on file, or their license comes from a source we can't confirm is their own state's HVAC board — they're still listed, just not badged. This number moves as registers are re-pulled and new listings are added; it's computed from the live data on every build, not a fixed figure.
Registers we check, by state
Each board below is checked against a real, publicly accessible license-lookup tool — the link goes straight to that board's own search page so you can verify any license yourself.
States with no statewide board
Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, New York, Pennsylvania have no statewide HVAC licensing board at all — licensing there is handled city-by-city or county-by-county, so there's no single state register to check against. Listings in these states are never badged Verified, because there's no statewide source capable of confirming them that way.
How fresh is the data
We don't yet have a per-register pull date logged for any source — that's a real gap, not a hidden one. Until it's populated, every listing's "checked against the register" date falls back to the date this site was last built, labelled honestly as a build-time check rather than a specific pull date.
Something looks wrong?
If a badge looks wrong, or a license you checked yourself doesn't match what we show, email contact@airprohq.com with the listing and what you found — we'll re-check it against the board directly.
